We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Ron Ellis. Ron was one of only five Maple Leafs to skate in more than 1000 games for the club, while also scoring the fifth most goals in team history. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones. #LeafsForever

The NHL mourns the passing of Ron Ellis, a life-long Toronto Maple Leaf and 1967 Stanley Cup winner who represented Team Canada at the 1972 Summit Series and was an executive at the Hockey Hall of Fame. Our thoughts are with his family and countless fans and friends in hockey.

Ron Ellis has died. In his NHL career, all with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1963 to 1981, he won the Stanley Cup and appeared in four All-Star Games. He was also part of Team Canada for the 1972 Summit Series. He is a member of the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame.

When was the last time the Leafs, Jays and Raptors were all simultaneously unlikeable and unwatchable? Maybe it’s time to inject more competition into the market for sports team ownership in Toronto, and maybe that might lead to different management strategies?🤷🏽‍♂️

Stanley Cup champion Ron Ellis, who played in over 1,000 games for the Maple Leafs, has passed away at the age of 79.

As teams evaluate their coaching options, I’m told Joel Quenneville’s status remains unchanged - he is still ineligible to coach. Edit: Some teams have indeed reached out, but also told his status is still the same. The Leafs, as of now, are not one of those teams.

Sad to hear that Ron Ellis, a veteran of @TeamCanada1972 and a member of the last Toronto Maple Leafs team to win the Stanley Cup in 1967, has passed away at age 79. Ellis appeared in 1,034 career regular-season games with the Leafs.

Can't shake a comparison I heard for the Leafs, where, the Blue Jays had a ton of offence with Lourdes and Teoscar but the culture was too relaxed and too "fun" so they let those guys go, and now they can't get enough hits and people are finding it less, well, fun.

The death of Ron Ellis at the age of 79 makes me sad, as it does everyone who knew or remembers the 16-year veteran of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Allow me a personal note: Ron was born January 8, 1945. So was I. RIP my exact birthday mate.

I think the focus for the Leafs should be trying to put together a team that can win the Presidents' Trophy. Just about all of the best regular season teams are having playoff success. Over focusing on "playoff players" can be dangerous.

So very saddened to hear of the passing of Ron Ellis. A wonderful two way player who was a key to the Leafs 67 Stanley Cup Run as well as the Team Canada 72 victory over the Russians. Ron always had a smile as he greeted you at the Hockey Hall of Fame. RIP #6
