Primary Logo (1976-1996) The original Tampa Bay Buccaneers logo features Bucco Bruce, a moustachioed pirate character with orange skin wearing a red feathered hat with long flowing red hair and a blade in its teeth. The logo was famously worn with the Bucs creamsicle-style uniforms from 1976 through 1996.

Hugh Culverhouse, a tax attorney from Jacksonville who had failed in his bid to buy the Los Angeles Rams, received the Tampa franchise. The new Tampa Bay franchise was named the “Buccaneers” or "Bucs," a reference to the pirates who frequented Florida's Gulf coast during the 17th century.

TAMPA, Fla. Captain Fear, the Buccaneer, was created in 2000 to replace the Bucs' former mascot, a parrot named Skully.
