The Uprising of 1857 at Meerut The Indian soldiers, both Hindus and Muslims, refused to use the greased cartridges. Apart from that, the flour sold in market was also rumored to have been mixed with powdered bones of animals. 85 of those who refused to use the cartridges were imprisoned and penalized for ten years.
