Carruth was convicted in a jury trial in Charlotte in 2001 of conspiracy to commit murder, but acquitted of a first-degree murder charge. He did not testify in his own defense. He has not seen his son since Chancellor was a year old, at a heavily supervised prison visitation before Carruth was convicted.
